Names are sacred. At least, most of us authors think so.

And our pets are precious, too.

So . . . what did you name your pet(s)? And why?

Most of our pets came to us already names. Colassus -- a lab mini rotweiller mix --because he was the runt of the litter. He grew to be larger than the average male lab. Catskill Red (cat) was named because she's red. Her former owner was from Catskill. Cutie Pie (son's cat), we don't know. But she a callico and I usually call her Callico Cutie. My dh calls her Patches because she looks like a cat he had as a child. Our daughter's lab (we share a duplex/farmhouse) is SweatPea, her favorite endearment for her pre-school kids when she taught pre-school. Granddaughter's rabbit is Snowy. He's white. Grandson's bunny is Lightning because he runs so fast. The pigs -- if you consider them pets -- are Oinkers and Benny Pig Pig. Benny is named after a story the grandkids have about a piglet named Benny who runs away from home. The three chickens don't have individual names. I call them the survivors because they are all that are left after a momma coyote (and her young?) paid us several nocternal visits.

Hmm, well, I guess I'll start with the most recent arrival and work my way back. The baby is Leo, the Whiteligher Kitty, he's orange and white, with a white skunkstripe down his back. Next youngest is Heaven, my daughter's cat. She's fat, white and looks like a marshmellow, with golden eyes. Topaz is my long haired, mostly black cat, with yellow eyes and he likes to stick his tongue out. He was initially a friend's cat and I ended up with him when a placement didn't work out, he came with the name. My big boy is Stirling, he's solid gray, but really, he's more pewter than stirling, he came with the name too. Rounding out the felines is Diesel. She's a long haired gray tabby, but she's got a huge purr on her, or at least she did when she was younger. She was saved from certain death at the pound. She's the one that lets us humans know that there's no food in the cat bowl. I have two and a half dogs. Darcy is named after Darcy Tucker from the Toronto Maple Leafs. He's tough, scrappy and a total cutie. He's part sheperd, part Bordre Collie. Dixie is a Border Collie, she came with the name. The half dog is the Jack Russell that lives with the ex. I get visitation rights. Her name is Briarpatch KittyKat of Reidell. Kitty for short. Don't ask, I didn't name her.
My horse's registered name is BNA Entyrely Fancy, which I read (spelled correctly) in a Harlequin years and years ago. I can still sort of remember what the story was about, it was concerning a ghost and a castle and either the H or h was wanting to prove whether or not it was 'real or entirely fancy'. Her barn name's Lee. And my daughter's goldfish's name is Clam. And I don't have a clue why.

Well, my first cat was a solid black male named Spock! He eventually left to join Starfleet! However, before Spockls departure, I got a orange tabby; and his name was Data! After Mr. Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation!! Several years after Spock's dissappearnace, Data was killed by a nightborhood dog! I still miss that cat! Data was such a loveable orange tabby!! During the time I still had Spock & Data, I got a female cat name Kira for Lt Kira on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine!! She took sick one night and the next morning I found her dead! But before kira's death, I was given a grey tabby! This kitten was only about 4-weeks-old when I got him!! So, I knew he was going to heve to STRONG to survive! So I named him Chatokey after Lt. Chakotay from Star Trek Voyager Who's character was a Native American! The name has stood Chakotay well to this day! About a year ago I moved from a house to a small apartment! So, I found Chakotay another home! I thank he missed Data--the orange tabby--s0, I feel like he's much happier now!! He lives in a house with children, a dog, and another cat!! Seems he is now the CAPTAIN!! Sometines I'm tempted to get another cat to name 'Trip' for Star Trek's 5th searies ENTERPRISE!! But i'm gonna stick with the "Beanie Babie" variety from now on!! But every time I see a orange tabby, I can't help but feel a little sad and miss my 'Datacat'!!All he ever wanted was a little food and a LOT of LOVE!!

Okay, we only have 3 cats right now. Our oldest is Nutmeg at 12yrs old, she was saved from the shelter. Nutmeg is the queen bee of the bunch. She is a lovely black calico and she was named prior to bringing her home. The name suits her very well, she is a spicey cat with an attitude. We call her Nutty or Baby and she just loves to be scratched. Her eyes are bright yellow and half her face is black and the other is an orange/white and black smear. Our middle cat is Goldie, she's 8. I had wanted Ginger but hey it was my daughters cat. According to Cassie she is a cat with an attitude that loves to be pet. They don't mix but she is addorable. When we took her to be fixed the vet just kept petting her and chatting away. MY sister was very perplexed by this because the man usually doesn't say boo. He was totally taken with Goldie because of her unusually long tail. We looked her up in a cat book, pluse the vet says she looks most like a tonkineese. Her fur is like satin and her pur is so loud. She loves to take string in her mouth, yowl and walk around. Our youngest is Bobcat at 5. He is the biggest baby, he is afraid of everything! Plastic bags, loud noises and people. He is a soft grey with bold black/grey tabby lines and a lot of fluffy white belly fur. He has a white chin and green eyes. The poor baby was the runt of the litter so we took him away from certain doom of being a barn cat. He would have never made the winter. He got his name because we felt he should be fearless. I guess that didn't pan out to well. When he cries it sounds like a kitten, he never got his "biggy boy voice". It's hard to be afraid of an overgrown kitten. Daretta Paul

I had a cat I named Zeus because I thought of all the animal forms Zeus took in mythology, he would have found perfection in a cat.

Over a year ago, a friend of mine found a beautiful stray in his rose bush. He named her Rosie. Rosie was pregnant and he gave me the picks of the litter --- a brother and a sister I named Apollo and Athena.

Athena is a little warrior who caught two baby lizards that got in the house. Apollo, blonde and beautiful, reminded me of the mythological sun god. He got out two weeks ago and I'm still looking for him.

I have a six year old Red Nose, Brindle and American mix Pit Bull. He's the most gentle giant I've ever known. His name is Ozzie. No, I didn't name him after the rock star, I just really liked that name.

Mary,

Thank you very much for your kind wish for my Apollo. I don't think you are nuts. I'd like to think he's off on a happy adventure if I don't see him again.

All the best to you,

Mary
