Writing Rituals (Anne Stuart)

I'm in the midst of a huge writing tear -- I have to write 250 pages in the next three weeks. Fortunately the story is wonderful, all sorts of rich things are popping up, and the worst problem will be to pare them all day. But because I've got to be so focused I'm very aware of my rituals, and what will help me get the most done.

First, I gotta kiss Gackt. Who's Gackt, do you ask? The prettiest, most deliciously androgynously sexy J-rocker. It's kind of like kissing the Blarney Stone -- it's for luck, not for lust (and there are even a series of funny Japanese commercials where a tiny old lady chases him around, trying to kiss him). He's just eminently kissable. I have to have the 2' by 3' calendar on my office door (this year's has a lot of shots of him lying bloody in the snow with white wolves all around him but a ritual's a ritual). I've been doing this for years --close the office door, shutting out the world, kiss Gackt, and start writing.
Then I put my headphones on and fire up High Focus, an audio program on my mp3 player. (Search for it on Amazon if you're curious -- I left a review). It's an audio cd (I bought it in tape form three times, but finally it came out in CD form so it doesn't get worn out) that at the very least provides white noise if you don't believe in the whole brain wave thing. For me, it helps me focus and turn out pages like crazy. Love it!
Sometimes I'll light a candle, depending on how paper strewn my office is. Right now I think it might be too dangerous -- I don't want to go up in flames -- but it's a good focusing method. I've got a musician's drink holder hooked to my standup lamp so I always keep cold Tab nearby, and whole grain goldfish are the food of choice. I have to have my recliner, my lap desk so the laptop doesn't weigh down on me (I have a couple of great ones by intrigo -- they don't make them any more), a quilt to wrap around my legs, and I'm set.
For maybe five minutes, when I'll get up and get something new to eat.
On a normal day I start when I get up. On a deadline it's any time of the day or night.
So those of you who are writers -- what are your rituals? Do you have any thing you absolutely have to do? Kissing Gackt is kind of like a Hail Mary or clapping twice at a Japanese shrine. A way to call the writing gods.
What do you guys do?

I commune with Waldo, the stuffed frog on top of my printer. I have a thing for frogs. I have a frog garden outside, and various frogs inside, but Waldo is my writing frog. I think my fascination comes from trying to turn my heroes from frogs into princes, so to speak.

I still write each chapter as a separate file, even though nowadays, the editors want them all in one file. When I finish the first draft, I put all the files together into one, print them up, and end up with pages strewn everywhere as I mark them up and make notes on what to change, add, move, delete, pump up, tone down--nah, I never tone anything down.

I have other rituals, but this one's on my mind, because I finished the draft yesterday and combined the files today. And Chapter 19 wouldn't open. Corrupt file. I saved it on disk, on a thumb drive, and on the hard drives of 2 computers, but it was corrupt on all of them, probably because I overwrote it when I was finished, so if one was corrupt they all were.

I did a file recovery thingie on the PC, and got back 3 of 12 pages.

Sigh.

That ritual is so cool. I bought my wife a boxed CD set that includend the 2005 calendar when I was in Japan. My wife's brother is Gackt's stepfather. So I guess he is as much my nephew as he is my wife's.

My BIL lives in Okinawa where he has been since he left the Marine Corps after retirement. He is the evidence custodian for the local NCIS office.

I have to have just the right scent to make it really work. My office is surrounded with things I love - a raggedy ann corner (dolls, throws, etc.) to remind me that I'm safe and cared for. A miniature shoe and purse corner to remind that beauty is very important. And...the scent of the day. Currently it's the scent of past four years - I can't get away from it. I found it in a little candle shop in Carmel. It comes only in little wax beads and I have to special order them by the pound.

I also have to have music. Maybe I just have to drown out my senses so that I can go in and focus! But every single book has it's own cd. That's creating a bit of a sound ruckus in my brain right now as I'm writing two very different books.

However, I can see that my biggest mistake is missing out on the kissing. How could I have passed that by???

I don't think I have rituals, at least none that I'm conscious of, and now I'm wondering if I should. I love the kissing Gackt idea. Did I spell that right?

I also write chapters in separate files, or did until this last book. Now I'm trying to force myself to do if not the entire book, then several chapters to a file. Makes me nervous, though, so perhaps it is a ritual and one I should honor. I was trying to practical and thinking it would save me lots of time.

This was a great topic. I'll have to give more thought to rituals that might put me in a writing state of mind.

Hold it, hold it!!! Ray! Your wife's brother is Gackt's stepfather? How could this be? Gackt was born 450 years ago in Norway and he's a vampire. Or so he says, the saucy boy.

Seriously, how extremely cool. May I touch you?
