. Post a comment for a chance to win free books!

Go figure. During the 2007 MLB World Series, Taco Bell promised a free taco to anyone and everyone who lives in the U.S. of A, but only IF a base was stolen during the series. A base was stolen, and according to their web site, Taco Bell intends to make good on their promise. You can actually get your free taco from a participating Taco Bell between 2 and 5 pm today, Tuesday, October 30th. You’ll find the link to their web site at the bottom of this blog. Be sure and check it out!
With that bit of good news and a quick update on the fires, I’m out of here for this week. After having lost several days to the upheaval here in southern California, I’m just getting back to writing and still facing a deadline that feels as if it’s approaching me at the speed of a comet. Fortunately, the wildfires are mostly contained, the air is beginning to clear in many areas, the heat has come down from the three-digit range, and we’re doing far better here than we were last week at this time.
Before I sign off, I want to pay tribute to our local fire fighters and the fire-fighting teams sent from all over the country to support them. I have never seen such extraordinary heroism as exhibited by the men and women battling the fires. They risked their lives to evacuate people safely and save their homes, worked around the clock for days with no sleep and whatever food they could eat on the run, and they’re still at it, trying to contain every last blaze. It’s hard to put that kind of dedication and self-sacrifice into words, and yet it’s all in a day’s work for these amazing folks. For me they have come to symbolize so much of what has always been good about this country. I just wish I could offer them something more than these inadequate words of praise, and my humble but very sincere thanks.
I also want to thank all of you for your prayers and good thoughts. The outpouring of love and concern from all over the world has done much to bolster the resolve of everyone here in socal. If any good has come of this, it’s been witnessing the miracle of people pulling together and realizing that we have all been tested, and we are much stronger than we knew.

Suz,
I'm with you the on deadline crunch. Book due on the 13th. Still many chapters to go.
So...thanks for lunch!! I haven't had a taco bell taco in years!
I did a book about a San Diego firefighter a few years ago and spoke with firefighters there in the city. I found them amazing then, their attitudes toward their jobs, their genuine love of their jobs. This latest incident shows the truth behind all of their words. And proves that our world is an incredible place to be.
Me too on deadline crunch, but family is taking precedence right now. I'm so excited about free tacos!
Suz, I'm so glad for the positive news regarding the fires. Such a relief that this is coming to an end. And huge kudos going out to all the firefighters from here as well.
Maggie
I am glad that the fires are contained. Wow, it must have been scary, I am glad you are ok!
So glad the fires are dying down and the air is better too. The Haymann fire outside of Denver was pretty scary here. I am with you on the firefighters. I used volunteer with the Red Cross Disaster Services in NC and I have never seen such heroism as I did in the firemen and women.
Deadline crunches may not be fun... but always great to hear from a reader's point of view. :-) oh goodie... a new one in the makes!
While my heart aches for those who lost their homes in the California fires, it also swells at the tales of human kindness that I've heard.
How fun on the free tacos! I'm at work until 5, so can't take advantage - oh well, they're inexpensive even at full price!
Am so glad the firefighters have most of the fires under control!
Hurrah for free tacos!
Tara and Mags, we need to form a deadline support group, lol.
I didn't have time to go and get myself a taco, but I hope some of you did. They're yummy, especially the supreme tacos with the sour cream, but they're probably not giving those away.
Another round of applause for brave firefighters everywhere.
Suz
That Taco looks yummy... and I have not eaten yet!
This post has been removed by the author.
It has also been years since I have eaten one!
I am glad the fires are cooling down!
The news this morning says that a kid playing with matches started the fire.
Darla, I saw that, and I am just sick. What do you do when one kid with matches can create so much devastation? Dear God.
Of course, that was just one fire. I think there were 18 in all, but still, what a nightmare to think that a kid did it. Really, any thought of arson is unbearable when you see the suffering it causes.
I wonder what they'll do about this.

With the trades and acquisitions made going into the draft, plus the bulk of the team that is carried over from last season, and the trades and draft picks made during the draft, it sure seems like the Pats are going to be the team to beat in the AFC this season, and perhaps in all of the NFL.
Considering the Pats were almost in the Superbowl last season with a pathetic receiving corps and that they've added very talented players into said receiving corps this season, barring some nasty injury(ies), they look to be the team to take it all.I say injury(ies) because I think they could survive an injury or two to some positions, but if they lost Brady they'd probably have a hard time recovering.
I wish I could say that the Redskins did well in the draft and/or in free agency but so many holes still exist that I'm not sure they'll be significantly better than last season. I suppose on face they should be if they can keep their corners healthy. With Landry (argh, hard to type that name as a Redskin!!) back there with a healthy secondary they might be able to cheat up more and put more pressure on opposing QBs. Might.
They still have what should be a lot of talent in the receiving positions, and Campbell should be better, but they don't have the quality on either line (offense or defense) that I wish they'd have, so it could be yet another year of .500 at best, or worse.
Still, the NFC East looks to be the NFC Least again this season. None of the teams there look like they'll be that good, and none really look ready to step up and take the division.
The best place for
2007 mlb show, mlb jersey, mlb hat. For more information visit: http://www.bet911.com
My hat is off to the firefighters who worked day and night at great risk to their own lives.
