Orgasmatron

So you all know that television is my life, right? Apart from books, that is. Television fed my fantasies and got me through a rough childhood (I used to sneak downstairs after my parents went to bed and watch old Errol Flynn movies on the Late Show). And, horror of horrors, our big 32" Sony died after fifteen years of faithful service.
It was a monster, that tv, generally referred to as Bubba, the Chinese TV (we paid for it with royalties from a sale of rights to China). It weighed about two hundred pounds (so much that two grown men could barely lift it), it was about three feet deep, and it was lovely, but all good things must come to an end (including arc-ing at the electricians).
But it was late May, and we only had enough money for either a lawn tractor or a new tv, and my husband never gets any toys (he's a saint). So I nobly said we could wait for the next advance check, due in the fall (I'm a saint and a liar).
We've made do with a grainy, 25 inch tv that's been sheer misery, awaiting the time I could get my lovely flat screen HDTV.
That day was yesterday. And I, er, did get carried away. My friends Sally and Jenny have 42 inch flat screens, and they just looked a wee bit small. So we bought a 50 inch, brought it home, and I set it up. All the good stuff, fixing the stereo system, hooking up the dvd and the vcr and the speakers. And everything works! (Let's hear a round of applause for Sister Krissie the Electronics Queen).
But oh my god is it obscenely huge! I should feel ashamed, embarrassed. Instead, after months of depression, I'm giggling.
(And no, I'm not bipolar. If I were bipolar I would have bought the television and a million other things this summer). Delayed gratification is actually quite nice. After I finish cleaning the living room and making it cozy I intend to have a visual feast of Howl's Moving Castle, Phantom of the Opera, Final Fantasy: Advent Children, The Last Samurai, and god knows what else.
Oh, joy, oh rapture. Who would have thought an obscenely large television could bring happiness?
So here's the question for the day. What movies should I watch to get the full glory of my magnificent orgasmatron? What would make my senses soar as the sound pounds through the speakers and the visuals fill my soul?

I am so envious, Krissie. And yeah, size does matter!

Darla's right about Lord of the Rings--all that fabulous new Zealand scenery. Not to mention Aragorn.

Speaking of scenery, male and otherwise, I'd go for Lawrence of Arabia, Last of the Mohicans, and the latest Bond flick, Casino Royale. Maybe Pirates of the Caribbean, for Johnny Depp. The Last Emperor is also fascinating and visually beautiful.

Enjoy!!!!!!

And here I've been feeling smug because I just bought a 47-inch LCD tv, which is to be delivered today. Should have known you'd outdo me.

Krissie: Honestly, I would think that just about any movie will look different on a tv that huge, which means you can go through your extensive video collection and perhaps re-enjoy movies you haven't watched for a long time. Do you have THE LAST SAMURAI? Gorgeous to look at!

BTW, did you get a new DVD player? I'm holding off for a while because of the HDTV/BlueRay choice. I figure eventually one format is going to win out over the other, and I don't want to be stuck with a [metaphorical] Betamax.

Anyway, enjoy your new toy!

I'd watch Lord of the Rings, The Princess Bride, the first Pirates of the Carribbean, The Illusionist, Pride and Prejudice (the 1995 BBC version), The Fugitive, Bridget Jones's Diary, the Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. All of them have scenes that will look muuuuuuuuuuuuuch better on a 50" screen than a grainy 25"-er. :)

Krissie,

Moulin Rouge. The sound is wonderful. The colors are wonderful. And it's such a classic Oprah-esque story.

And then, Under the Tuscan Sun. Italy is the most beautiful place I've ever seen and it's portrayed in full glory in that movie. And...the story is all about a woman coming out of hard times, out of the worst depression she's ever been in, to fight the odds and a universe that says no, to find true peace and even happiness in her own strength.

I too am envious. Deeply, powerfully envious. I have an old 42 inch TV but oh how I want one of the new generation sets. I'm with Lynn on Lawrence of Arabia. What a great sweeping film.

Thanks for all the great ideas. And I own almost all of those movies, so I'll haul them out.
Lynda -- I bought a new progressive scan dvd player. Like you I don't want to buy Blu-ray or HD until they pick a format and stick to it. I was thinking of buying one of those upconverting DVD players, but I read reviews and it sounded like they weren't worth the money.

Oh wow what a truly, over-the-top t.v.! We are in need of a new one also. Congratulations on your new toy!

I would suggest the first Jurassic Park movie. The big footsteps the dinasaurs make are really impressive when you have a quality sound system like yours. The Star Wars movies have a lot of special effects and neat music and sound. Oh you can't forget fun movies like "ET the Etra Terrestrial", "Romancing the Stone", "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Back to the Future". I will never forget when "Raiders of the Lost Ark" came out at the theaters we took my mom and dad to see the movie. My dad hadn't been to a theater in years! Well, when that big ol ball comes rolling down after Harrison Ford, my dad was actually trying to duck in his seat! He said it felt like it was coming straight at him watching it on the big movie screen. We had a laugh over that!

Congratulations! Happy Thanksgiving!

Great new TV! My husband would be jealous.
How about THE 13TH WARRIOR, ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, any Bond Flick, GROSSE POINT BLANK, or SUMMER SCHOOL. I would go for the Mark Harmon movie myself, especially since it is true that the devil has blue eyes and wears blue jeans.
