Yesterday (Wednesday) was my birthday. If you want to know my age, ask my grandson. When he asked, I said, "twenty-nine, hon." He says, "but I thought you were already twenty-nine." I said, "yep, that's right." And he said, "but my mom is twenty-seven." And I said, "that's very good, dear. My goodness, you're smart."
He's getting a little too smart, but oh, well. You're as young as you feel, right? And it's just a number and it only has the meaning we give it. I choose not to give it any.
This year, there were a solar eclipse and a new moon that both fell on my birthday. This is supposed to be ushering in a very positive set of changes and opportunities and growth in my life. I'm really excited about that. But then again, that's what I look for on every birthday, and every New Year's Day as well. I'm always thinking of new cycles beginning and looking ahead to what the year will bring. (Read your own horoscopes from the most accurate, insightful astrologer I've ever met, Susan Miller, at www.astrologyzone.com.)
One of the main features of this past year has been the way my relationships have grown, deepened, and changed. Every one of them is at a better, firmer, closer level now, but some of them--no, I think it's safe to say ALL of them -- took a rather painful route to get there. And yet, they're better now than ever before. There's more communication, more real feeling, more closeness, more understanding. Depth. It's a beautiful thing to have that sort of a bond with someone.
So what will this coming year bring? It's exciting just to contemplate it. Life is such a ride, isn't it? It's one I'm enjoying I'l tell you. Even the times when it gets bad--or bad according to my limited point of view while living it--it just makes me want more of the good stuff, and appreciate it more when it comes, as it inevitably does. And I've learned over the course of this year that you can predict what's coming, according to what you want, and your attitude toward it. If you desire something, your desire creates it, and if you can go through life happy, positive, and joyously expecting your desires to be fulfilled, they will be. (Most of us spend our lives grumpily grinching that our desires aren't here yet--which prevents them from coming.)
There's a house down the road from my own wonderful Serenity. And I love that house. And I love this house too. But that one sits right on the water, and that really appeals to me. I would have bought it if it had been for sale when I'd found this one, but it wasn't. And I do love where I am. But I think I might like that one better. I feel very certain that house is in my future. It's still not for sale. It's waiting for me to be ready to buy it, I think.
Huge financial changes are in my future. Eradication of debt is one of my chief focuses of the year. It'll be fun getting there.
I have no doubt more fun trips are in my future. I totally intend to do Letchworth again, not just for my annual group trip there, but for a side trip, for some more kayaking, and horseback riding and hot air balloon rides and hiking and swimming and stuff. It's a great park. I'm craving another, bigger trip too, to one of my favorite places. Somewhere hot and sunny with water nearby. Salem. New Orleans. Virginia Beach. Somewhere tropical, maybe. No doubt about it, this year I'm going to travel.
I have a new living room set in my immediate future. That's not going to be put off much longer. I've been vibrating that for a long while now and it's about ready to manifest.
There's a new book contract in my future as well. This summer, in fact.
It occurs to me that there's a way to use numerology and the Tarot to determine the main focus of your year. You take your birthdate, only you substitute the current year for the year of your birth. (So for me that would be 2/6/2008 this year.) Then you add those numbers together. 2 + 6 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 8 = 18.
(If the sum is 23 or more, you need to add those two digits together until you get an answer that is 22 or less.)
Now you match your year number to the Major Arcana card in the Tarot that bears the matching number. This can sometimes be eerily accurate. For example, the year my mom died, my youngest left home, and my marriage ended was a year in which my year card was The Tower. Anyone with even a passing knowledge of Tarot knows that's a pretty good match.
(You can find more on finding your personal power cards of the Tarot in the book TAROT FOR YOUR SELF by Mary K. Greer.)
So this year my year card is The Moon. So I'll be meditating on that card and its meaning, and watching for my life to follow a moonlit path through this coming year. The moon is associated with water, too, so that bodes well for my love of and longing to be near the wet stuff!
A birthday tarot reading is an annual treat for me. Any of you have any fun or slightly mystical birthday traditions to share?
Even the traditional birthday candle has its roots in folk magick, you know. (It's where you least expect it, isn't it?)
Share your birthday thoughts and ideas. I celebrate all week, so I can still adopt some of them! Oh, and hey, while we're at it, if you post your birthday in the comments section, I'll post back and tell you which card is your focus for the year! This could be fun!
Best,

Happy Belated Birthday!
On our special day my mom always made a birthday cake and you had a say in the meal that was served that day.
I buy my kids a cake unless my mom is visiting and insists on making it. My husband and I invite our friends over for the kids' birthdays and he grills veggies, and chicken & beef kabobs along with tons of other food. We enjoy the view(we have open space behind us) and the company. If it is warm enough the kids swim. Usually a great time had by all.
My B'day is October 9.
Cheers!
Cheryl
Maggie,
Happy birthday! I love Susan Miller's site, I've been reading her horoscopes for years.
My birthday is 12/6. Thanks for doing this! :)
My birthday is 8/20, which appears to come out at 13...Death. Please tell me that's a *good* thing!
Sharyn
Cheryl--your year card is Judgment, which is all about a re-birth, hearing a "calling," a new awakening to a new life or life purpose. A spiritual awakening. Judgments made, criticism, a longing to join with another.
Mine is The Moon--A tug between the wild and the domesticated parts, recognizing illusion, seeing beneath the surface, physical evolution and learning about nature.
Carolynn--19, the Sun. Enlightenment, clarity, understanding, energy, creativity, personal growth, triumph, a search for knowledge, beginning or making progress in areas of study.
Sharyn 8 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 8 =20. Not Death. Judgement. I posted on this one earlier. The card shows what looks like the archangel Michael blowing a trumpet and people rising from graves into heaven. It's meant to depict a spiritual awakening, or rebirth, or a calling into a new way of understanding, a new way of thinking or of being. Rewards delivered.
The death card, though, usually depicts a cycle ending and a new one beginning, which is usually a painful experience but always beneficial and often necessary for the best outcome.
Also, everyone, be sure to snap up a card from any Tarot deck and just look at it open-mindedly. You might see things that are different from the standard interpretation, and those are the most valid types of readings truth be told!
When I look at the moon card, for example, I've always seen the two sides of a person, the wild side depicted by the wolf, and the domestic side, by the dog, and the tug and pull between them. There's a path with a scary looking scarab beetle on it. A path one can see, that has something scary on it. Then there's water, with fish underneath. It's sort of another path, a path you can't see, with hidden things, maybe scary, maybe not, but you can't see them. Which path do you take? It can be a choice. It is typically a tugging between believing in reality or believing in illusion. But that doesn't quite mesh with my life-path. In my life path, you create your own reality by daring to dream and desire and make your "illusions" become real.
There's so much in the card. The symbolism of dog (loyalty, friendship, dependability) of wolf (fierceness, packs, the night) of scarab (death and rebirth) of the water (transformation) of lobster (darned if I know, but I'll look it up!)
Hehehe.
Mag
Happy birthday, Maggie! No real birthday rituals here, but my birthday is 7/10, and it would be great to have a little idea of the focus of the coming year. Especially since I feel like my life, emotions and relationship are in utter chaos right now, arrgh!
Thanks for this! :)

Hey, me too! (smiles)
I'm with Darla, a Virgo, 9/15.
Hope you had a fabulous birthday!

My girls and I tend to celebrate over a week too. We try to get together for the actual birthday, but stretching it over a week gives more time to arrange nice celebrations of the b'day person occasions/moments with friends and family.Somehow the girls come home on a weekend either side of their birthday for a nuturefest too.
I'm presently gearing up for my eldest daughter's birthday next Monday.
Happy Birthday Maggie. Thanks for the offer regarding the card focus. My birthday is the 5th of August.
Happy Birthday (one day late) Maggie. My birthday is April 12 if you have time.
Happy Birthday to you Maggie! I hope you had a fantastic day!
My B-day is 12-31. I am a New Year's eve baby.
Many blessings to you for a wonderful day!

My birthday is 10/19.
And thanks for the astrology web site!

Happy Birthday!!
I do angel cards, but haven't ever done tarot, though I had a reading once that was completely accurate.
My birthday is 8/22. A Leo on the cusp.
And Maggie, what did you DO for your birthday??? Enquiring minds want to know!
HOLY CRAP! Susan Miller posted a comment on my blog. Did you guys SEE THAT? Susan Freakin' Miller posted on my blog! OMYGOSH! =)
Thank you Susan!!!!! You made my day. Can you day I'm an awestruck fan?
Okay, guys, I'll post in a sec with your numbers/cards.
Susan Miller. WOW.
Three of you are 17s. Deseng, Estella and Ellen. This card is The Stars. It's got to do with inspiration, creative energy and ideas, being inspired, having energy and motion added to your creative ideas. Using astrology and other methods for seeing more. Peace and serenity, and a sort of calm after the storm. Very nice.
Darla, Thea and Suz, you are all 7's--The Chariot. Self control and self discipline. In the card two opposing forces represented by the white horse and the black horse, are pulling your chariot for you. You must exert the control to make them work together, to take you where you want to go, otherwise, you get nowhere. It's all about control, direction, planning, movement. And possibly a journey.
More coming....
Louis and Catherine--you're both 5's. The Hierophant or High Priest.
Cherry is an 18. The Moon. (See my two posts about the moon card!)
Pattie is 21: The World or The Universe!
Tara is 22 which counts as 0, which is great! The Fool.
Okay, the Hierophant/High Priest is the male portion of the energy needed to make magick. You need both, force and form, semen and egg, electricity and the wire to guide it. This is the electricity, the force, the current. Spark and energy come to you. It can also represent guides and teachers, giving or receiving advice, a guru student relationship, loyalty to rules and structure of a system or tradition.
The World or Universe is the final card of the major arcana, and the symbol of manifestation and the movement between the physical and the spiritual, births and deaths, astral travel, beginnings and endings, the start of a whole new cycle. Dancing on your limitations. Living completely and wholly with the understanding of who and what you are having reached a new, empowering level.
The Fool is one of my favorite cards, Tara. His number is zero, and his message is "Today is the first day of the rest of your life." The card represents pure, unfettered potential. ANYTHING is possible for you. You're beginning a new journey. Trust in the joy of it, and don't look down, just rush forward and embrace it.
Meditate on your cards, everyone. You'll get so much out of them.
Maggie
Tara--What I did on my birthday?
I went out to lunch with one daughter, another came for an afternoon visit, everyone called, and I got lots of happy birthday emails too.
And I had a fantastic evening out later on.
The celebration continues. I'm heading to the mall Sunday with the firstborn. Other plans are in the works, too. It goes on and on with this family. =)
Maggie
Hi Maggie -- I was just now able to read your blog post. But I've been on your fittness loop. I would love to know my card.
My birthday 11-24. Would this card be for this current year or after my next birthday???
Thanks,
Tina
Thanks SO much Maggie!
Keep on having a great birthday week!
pattie
Hey, Maggie--I got out a pen to write down my numbers so I could figure out my card, and we have mirror birthdays: yours is 2/6, mine is 6/2. And I have Aquarius rising.
Just thought it was kind of funny. Happy birthday! I will go meditate on our shared card now. The Moon, the Moon.
SrB
Hey, Maggie, I got out a pen to write down my numbers and realized that we have mirror birthdays: yours is 2/6, mine is 6/2. And my rising is Aquarius.
Cool. I will go study the moon card now.
That anonymous person is me, SrB. I dont know why I seem to always tangle with Blogger.
Happy Be-lated Birthday! February is a busy birthday month for my family. My older brother and my mother-in-law share the third, my husband has the eighth, my mother is the tenth, and my younger brother has the eleventh. We all decided to just meet for a big birthday dinner on the 10th, to celebrate all of their birthdays. It was a blast. (My daughter's father's family also has a few people with February birthdays.) My birthday is April 6.
Tina Maria--that's a good question. Your card for 11-24-2007 would work out to a 17, or The Stars. Creative energy, inspiration, motion added to your magic, things really coming together. I think that card would go until your birthday in 08, which would be the Moon, same as my card for the year. (take note all you guys will late birthdays. I think they go from birthday to birthday.)
Celtic Gypsy--4-6-2008 is a 20, or Judgment. I think I posted about that earlier, it denotes a spiritual awakening or some kind of realization, new, deeper understanding or knowledge.
This post really got some comments, didn't it?
=)
