I'm heading off to Disney World next Monday (no post next week but a trip report the following) and I'm trying to figure out what to put on my iPod, since I'm (gasp) not taking my computer.
First I thought I needed a little soulful music. I've just discovered Jimmy Lafave, and I adore him. It doesn't hurt that he looks like my favorite cousin, and he's got a great voice. Just what I need to be listening to to get me in the mood for SILVER FALLS (the new book).
I also downloaded one of my favorite cartoons, What's Opera, Doc? iTunes
didn't have much Disney available -- I'm a sucker for Silly Symphonies but they only have The Old Mill, which is lovely but not necessary. So What's Opera, Doc? will have to do. The only problem being that I tend to start singing "Oh, Bwoonhilda, you're so wuvwee," "Yes I know it, I can't help it" in the appropriate voices.Other stuff: Right Here by Staind, Benedictus by the Strawbs, Dir en Grey, J'ai Perdu Mon Eurydice for Ofeo et Eurydice by Gluck, Richard Thompson (always), White Stripes, the Proclaimers, Radiohead, Gnarls Barkley, Van Morrison, Tim Buckley, Jeff Buckley, and the oddest combination of music you've ever heard. I just threw everything on that I'd been listening to recently -- not the same as a soundtrack. Once I get back I'll finetune my soundtrack for SILVER FALLS -- I've already got a good base for it but I'll need more. Definitely more Jimmy Lafave, some Teddy Thompson as well as Richard (if you ever need a generic songtrack for my contempories Richard Thompson would be it). I may toss a bit of Nic Cave in there as well.
I don't know if there's a form of music I don't like. Name a genre of music and I can name a song I love. Maybe I'll have to upload some Disney hits to put me in the mood, but you know, I don't think there's any way I can not be in the mood.
When I come back I'll be older and wiser and probably fatter, and I promise a great trip report.

In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions for new music to put on my iPod (affectionally known as Big Silver), please post them. I'm a vampire for new music.

So old it's new again and waaaay out there - Fred Astaire. He sings too!
Anything by Cole Porter or Noel Coward. And sing along. Loudly.
Dave Alvin, alone or in a group. His "California" cd is terrific, a great compilation.

Music from the 50-60 & 70's is my fav!
Hm…I’m enamored with anything by Muse or Linkin Park. Linkin Park especially helps me connect with those dark heroes--there is a lot of aggression in their music. Yum.
On another note, I tried to hunt down FIRE AND ICE yesterday in the hopes that it was shelved early. No luck. Looks like I’ll have to pace the floors until May 1st. Until then though, I have MUSEUM PIECE to keep me company.
Have a great trip to Disney land. I'm so jelous.
Kate
Linkin Park, eh? I do have Muse (they're in my vampire playlist along with Evanescence and a wonderful Claudia Schmidt song (Vampire).
I always need dark twisted hero music. I'll check them out.
Anne,
Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood for a little younger perspective.
robyn in Iowa (the Country Western fan)
Springsteen
Beatles
Stones
The Who
other 60s British invasion--The Kinks, Zombies, etc.
Bon Jovi
Green Day (American Idiot)
Hem (Rabbit Songs)
Carole King
Maggie Sansone (she plays a mean hammered dulcimer)
The Cheiftans
Vivaldi
Mozart
Yo Yo Ma
Sorry, I could go on and on. Oh, also Laura Pausini, Italian pop singer. I LOVE "What's Opera, Doc?" I'll have to download that to my (old) Nano.
Enjoy your trip!!!
Have you tried My Chemical Romance--Black Parade CD is the best. I love Helena, I'm not Okay and You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us in Prison, off the Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge CD.
Amy Winehouse is amazing.
Have fun on your trip.
Margaret
Ooh, thanks for the suggestions. The only one I haven't hear of was Hem. (I have Maggie Sansone cds).
And I think I heard something by My Chemical Romance that I really liked.
Off to check things out.
Anne,
I found out about Hem from an insurance commercial--the "what's your policy?" company. They don't play the commercial w/Hem's song (Half Acre) much any more though.
Researched them online--found web site and songs, I believe they're based in Brooklyn.
Have to load my iPod w/more stuff tonight, going on a writing retreat this wkend--need tunes!
Happy listening!
