The Good and Bad This Week (Patricia Potter)

My blog will be short this week for several reasons, one of which is a stray muscle or nerve gone awry.

There’s an elusive pain that starts in my right shoulder, runs up my neck and explodes in my head. It came on Tuesday and shows little sign of departure. I’m writing this in great fear of moving my head.

I had just had my physical early Tuesday and was celebrating the fact that I had passed, except for one test I have to retake. Then the pain started Tuesday night. Couldn’t sleep then or Wednesday, but I thought it would go away. It didn’t. It grew harsher on Thursday and I gave in and called the doc.

Unfortunately mine was out of town. The on-call doc in the office listened, then prescribed a muscle relaxant. It’s not doing much good. It’s fine for about two hours, then bang, comes that pain again. It starts as an ache in my shoulder, gets sharper as it runs up my next and seems to explode in the back of my head.

If I’m completely still, it’s okay. But any move sends it roaring again.

If it doesn’t get better tomorrow, I’m off to the emergency room and, believe me, that’s rare for me. I’ve always had a very high pain threshold and I loathe going to a doctor.

The big problem: I’d planned to take my photo shop course Saturday. Already bought a camera and paid for it. I don’t want to miss it. I want to add a gaggle of photos to my blog. But I don’t want my head exploding in class.

So have you all experience anything like I described?

Any suggestions as to a remedy?

There’s good news now, though. My December book, Behind The Shadows, has been selected for five book clubs, including Rhapsody (the romance club), Doubleday Book Club, The Literary Guild, Book of the Month and Mystery Guild. They will be listed as the featured alternate.

Needless to say, I’m really happy. I’ve been in two of them before but never Book of the Month and Mystery Guild.

Find a good massage therapist.

Fabulous about all the book clubs! Wow, how did that happen, besides the obvious--that BEHIND THE SHADOWS is a fabulous book!

I see Barbara has suggested a massage therapist. I was going to say a really good chiropractor, but I've had better luck with massage therapists.

It sounds to me like you have a pinched nerve. If you can manage to Google it, you'll probably find a wealth of information. I've also had tremendous luck with Aleve for any problems with my neck and shoulders. Not so much the rest of my body, by when I mess up my neck, it's great.

Lots of healing hugs,
Suzanne

Hope you feel better soon, Patricia. I've never experienced that kind of pain, but I do get some nasty headaches every so often. Aspirin usually takes care of the problem. Have you ever thought of going to an acupuncturist?

Ouch!

I hope you are feeling better soon.

I have never experienced any thing like you described but seeing a doctor would be my suggestion. Whether you decide on a MD or a chiropractor I would definitely consider having x-rays taken, especially if you see the chiropractor. Hopefully all you need is some rest, a pain reliever, and maybe a muscle relaxant.

Sending warm, happy thoughts your way. Feel better soon, please.

Pat,

Hoorah on the book! Not so much on the pain. I'm with the "massage therapist and chiropractor" bunch. Both of mine have done wonders for the chronic back pain I cope with! I'd vote for Aleve in the short term, too. Hope you heal soon-that kind of pain stops everything.

Well Patricia, I've experienced the exact same thing you have...just this last week!

Sounds like you have a pinched nerve or swollen disk. Last weekend we were helping my mom out by cutting, trimming and cleaning up the yard where her old house is, we're getting it ready to sell. I was fine Saturday and Sunday, but Monday my neck shoulder and upper right back were hurting, burning and I was unable to turn my neck or bend it to the side (it was pure hell trying to bend my neck when it came to getting into my van). I went to my chiropractor Monday and Tuesday and he adjusted my neck & back. Its still tender and sore but the pain is getting better every day. Until you can get to the Doctor, try ibupropfen and put an ice pack on your neck several times a day (they both help with inflamation). Good luck, I really hope you feel better soon!

I just finished taking a 6 week photoshop class...man can that program do some fantastic things...enjoy...I look forward to seeing some of your photos.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I went to the emergency room yesterday (it had gotten progressively worse) and they said it was a sprained muscle. I asked why that would hurt so much, and they said that if affects the nerve as well.
Anyway I'm loaded down with medication and will try a masssage if that doesn't work in the next two days.
